Description

Founded in the 2nd century BC, the capital of Mauritania was a key outpost of the Roman Empire, embellished with many magnificent monuments. Today, significant remains of these structures can still be found at the archaeological site, nestled in a fertile agricultural region. In later years, the city briefly served as the capital of Idriss I, the founder of the Idrissid dynasty, who was buried nearby in Moulay Idriss.
