Description
The Lixus Archaeological Site, located on the right bank of the Loukkos River about 4 km from its mouth, has a long history dating back to antiquity. The ancient city of Lixus was founded in the first third of the 8th century BC and was built atop a hill called “Techemc.” According to archaeologists, findings indicate that the site went through five distinct phases: Phoenician, Punic, Mauritanian, Roman, and Islamic.
The site flourished significantly under the Mauritanian Kingdom, particularly during the reigns of King Juba II and Ptolemy. It also reached a peak of prosperity during Roman times, owing to salt-making and dynamic urban growth.
