Description
Founded in 1919 during the Spanish protectorate by Spanish painter Mariano Bertucci and Abdessalam Bennouna, the National School of Arts and Crafts of Tetouan is located across from Bab El Oqla, one of the seven historical gates of the old Medina of Tetouan.
The monument is characterized by its exceptional Andalusian-style architecture, reflecting a particular era of craftsmanship during which Moroccan, Spanish and Jewish artisans coexisted.
The primary mission of this institution is to train students from Tetouan and surrounding areas in traditional crafts, particularly those which are at risk of disappearing, in an attempt to preserve them. It also encourages future generations to invest in the craft sector and contribute to preserving Tetouan's rich artistic traditions.
More than a training institution, the school is a living museum, housing numerous items that clearly illustrate the history and artistry of traditional craftsmanship.
It also includes a heritage interpretation centre, which aims to raise awareness, provide information and promote the heritage, history and arts of the city of Tetouan
